Castle Connections

Saturday 20th May & Sunday 21st May 11am – 4pm

On the weekend of 20th-21st May Herstmonceux Castle will be celebrating the work of those who ensure  the Castle occupies a place at the heart of the community. For two days, societies, associations and charities with whom the Castle has some form of connection will be showcasing their work to visitors at this event. So often, the work of the those connected to the Castle is known to just a few, and this event is the chance to raise awareness among all who work at or visit the Castle. For example, did you know that we work alongside local beekeepers and have beehives on site to encourage ecological diversity?

The societies so far signed up include Forest School, Archers of Herstmonceux, the Eastbourne Beekeepers Association, Bexhill 100 Motoring Club, Knights of Herstmonceux, East Sussex Falconry. And there are so many more! All activities on offer, such as the archery, are included in the entry fee.

‘Step back in time and join the spectacular weekend celebration’

England’s Medieval Festival is the largest and most authentic medieval themed festival in the UK.

It’s a complete day out, and magical weekend experience for the entire family.

Enjoy the thrill of Knights Jousting; Twice daily Battle and Siege of the Castle; magnificent Grand Parades; highly-skilled Falconry displays; Hundreds of Craftsmen and Traders; a Kid’s Kingdom; Crafts & Games areas; Workshops & Demonstrations; Minstrels, Magicians; Jesters; Hog Roasts and even a hilarious Mud Show!

There’s plenty of opportunity to join the fun too – with have-a-go jousting, archery and axe throwing; sword school; drum school; plus workshops for all ages, including chainmail, calligraphy, wood-weaving, blacksmith-forging and many other traditional arts and crafts.

Wizards, jesters, knights, dragons and princesses delight the kids; while the living history village offers the chance to see what it would really have been like to live in the Middle Ages.

Traditional musicians join a music line-up of foot-stomping folk bands who perform each day and evening on four outdoor and two indoor stage areas.

This year’s line-up of performers includes: Noble Jacks, Perkelt, Portcullis, Pyba, Georgia Lewis & Friends, Rowan Luis & Friends, Bring back the Wolf, Green Diesel, Boondock, Pentacle Drummers,  Stix,  Peasants Pottage, Perdix, United & Queen’s Players…with more to be announced soon.

Real ale, traditional mead and medieval eats are available alongside delicious cuisine for all the family; and kids of all ages adore the moonlit cinema showing medieval themed classics.

The festival hosts several weddings, blessings and traditional hand-fasting celebrations over the weekend, and to celebrate the 25th anniversary, any couples also celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary can come to the festival for FREE!!
